Key points
  • Our new computer system doesn’t change the rules or the way you can manage your plan.
  • You can manage your new plan the same way as your previous plan if you want to.
  • You can decide if you want to give your consent for providers to see your NDIS plan.

There are three options to manage your NDIS funding:

You can manage your plan in one way or use a combination of the three options. At your plan meeting, your NDIA planner will ask you some questions about your needs and circumstances to help you choose the best way to manage your funds.

No matter how your funds are managed, you still have choice and control to ensure your services are working for you and fit your budget. Even if your funding is managed by the NDIA or a plan manager, you should regularly check the my NDIS participant portal and your funding to make sure your budgets are on track.

Our new computer system does not change the rules for how you can manage your plan. If you are already an NDIS participant, when your plan moves to our new computer system you can continue to manage your plan the same way.

Whichever way your plan is managed, you can decide if you want to give consent for providers to see your NDIS plan.

Your my NDIS contact

When we talk about your my NDIS contact we mean the person who works with you to help with:

  • your NDIS application
  • using your plan
  • making changes to your plan.

Your my NDIS contact can be a person at the NDIA, a local area coordinator or an early childhood partner.

Plan management is when a provider supports you to manage funding in your NDIS plan. These providers are known as plan managers.

You can use a plan manager to help you increase your financial and plan management skills and pay your providers.

The rules for including and using a plan manager for your NDIS plan are the same for participants everywhere in Australia.

At your plan meeting, your NDIA planner will talk to you about the best way to manage your plan. If you have plan management funding for some or all of the supports in your plan, you will choose the plan manager you want to work with.

If you already have a plan manager and want to keep working with them, you can let us know at your plan meeting and we will record this provider as your plan manager. They will also be recorded as a participant-endorsed provider for your plan.

If you are choosing a plan manager for the first time, or you want to change the plan manager you have, you can look for providers who deliver this service. Your local area coordinator or support coordinator can support you with this. You can also use the tools on our website, like the provider finder.

You or your nominee need to tell us when you choose or change your plan manager. You can tell us at any time.

You can tell us when we meet with you for your plan meeting or plan implementation meeting, or by getting in touch with your my NDIS contact, local area coordinator or our National Contact Centre.

When you work with a plan manager, we ask for your consent for them to see the parts of your NDIS plan they manage.

You can keep track of your funding and supports in the my NDIS participant portal and app.

Participants with a plan developed in our new computer system can now choose to have plan-managed specialist disability accommodation and behaviour supports in their plan.

These supports must be delivered by providers who are registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission.

Our new computer system does not change the NDIS policy for self-managing your plan, or your responsibilities as a self-manager.

If you already self-manage all or part of your plan, you will still be able to self-manage your plan when you transfer to our new computer system.

If you want to start self-managing all or part of your new NDIS plan, you can talk to your my NDIS contact at any time, or to the NDIA planner who approves your plan. Your planner will ask you some questions to help decide the best way to manage your plan.

Participants with a plan developed in our new computer system can now choose to have self-managed specialist disability accommodation and behaviour supports in their plan.

These supports must be delivered by providers who are registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission.

A new participant portal and app

The new participant portal is called the my NDIS portal and the new participant app is called the my NDIS app.

Once you have an approved plan, you will use the my NDIS portal and app to view your plan and make claims against your self-managed funds.

We have resources on our website like ‘how to’ videos and frequently asked questions to help you to register and use the my NDIS portal and app.

Until your plan changes over to our new computer system, you should continue to use the myplace participant portal the same way you do now. Even when you move to the new my NDIS portal and app, you will be able to see previous plans and claims in the myplace participant portal.

Making claims and receiving payments

The way you make claims in the new my NDIS portal and app won’t change.

You still need to provide the same information, like the date the service was delivered, its cost, the provider’s information and the support category you are using to pay for the support.

The timeframes for payment of claims don’t change with our new computer system. If all of the claim details are correct, payment will usually occur within 1 to 2 business days.

You must include the provider’s ABN when submitting a claim for self-managed specialist disability accommodation or behaviour supports.

If some or all of your NDIS plan is managed by the NDIA, this means you have asked us to pay for supports from your plan, on your behalf.

We also refer to this as Agency-managed.

When the NDIA manages some or all of your plan:

  • Your supports need to be delivered by NDIS registered providers. You can’t use unregistered providers.
  • You choose who your NDIS registered providers are.
  • Your providers can claim payments from your funding.
  • You can see your plan and budget in the my NDIS participant portal or app.
  • The NDIA manages your book-keeping and records of your spending.

Our new computer system does not change the rules for Agency-managed participants but it does introduce some improvements to how we process payments for the parts of your plan that are Agency-managed.

We ask participants who have a plan built in our new computer system and:

To choose participant-endorsed providers for their NDIS plan.

If some, but not all of your plan is Agency-managed, you only have to tell us who your endorsed providers are for your Agency-managed supports.

You can keep track of your funding and supports in the my NDIS participant portal and app.
