We follow rules when we make decisions about what supports you get.

We also think about:

  • what support you need
  • what supports you already have in your life.

This page explains how we make decisions.

What we can give you funding for

Your NDIS plan is a document that has information about:

  • you and your goals
  • the supports you need
  • the funding the NDIS will give you.

Funding is the money from your plan that pays for the supports you need.

People often ask us what supports we can agree to put in their plans.

It can be hard to understand why we do not include some supports you asked for in your plan.

For example, you might know someone who has the same disability as you.

But you might have different supports to them.

There are rules about what we can give you funding for.

We also think about what you already have in your life.

For example:

  • your living situation
  • the support you get from family and friends.

The rules and laws we follow

The Australian Government made laws about what supports we can give you funding for.

We used these laws to make our funding criteria.

Funding criteria are the rules that explain what supports we will give you funding for.

Supports in your plan must meet our funding criteria.

We must also make sure your supports are:

  • reasonable – it is fair
  • necessary – you need it

You can use our reasonable and necessary guidelines to find out more about:

  • our funding criteria
  • how we decide if supports are ‘reasonable and necessary’

You can find out more on our page about Reasonable and necessary supports.
