The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can connect people with disability to supports and services.

This page explains how we can support people with disability who are 9 years or older.

How the NDIS can support you

The NDIS is just one service that supports people with disability in Australia.

It works with other services to make sure people with disability get the support they need.

If you are between 9 and 64 years old, we can connect you to:

  • information in your community
  • supports in your community.

We call this community connections.

This includes connecting you with mainstream supports.

Mainstream supports are from other parts of the government.

For example, health and education services.

It also includes connecting you with community supports.

Community supports are from organisations in the community.

For example, religious groups or sporting clubs.

You can find out more on our page about Making connections.

You can contact us to find out:

  • what disability supports you can get
  • if you should apply to the NDIS.

You can call us.

We will connect you with an NDIS partner.

NDIS partners are people who help others find and use services.

For example, a local area coordinator.

A local area coordinator is someone who helps people with disability find and use supports.

NDIS partners can help you to connect with:

  • mainstream supports
  • community supports.

If you are 65 years or older, we will give you information about aged care services.

You can find out more about aged care services on the My Aged Care website.

If you cannot join the NDIS, your NDIS partner will keep supporting you to find and use other services.

You can find out more on our page about connecting with an NDIS partner near you.

How to get extra support

If you need extra support, we will connect you with someone from the NDIA who can help you.

They will support you to:

  • learn about what support you can get
  • decide if you should apply to the NDIS.

You can find out more on our page about how you can Apply to the NDIS.

You might need extra support if you:

  • are in hospital
  • are in the justice system.

The justice system includes:

  • prisons
  • the courts
  • police
  • the law.

Participants are people with disability who take part in the NDIS.

You can still be a participant if you are in the justice system.

You can find out more on our page about the Justice system.

You might also need extra support if you live far away from cities or towns.

You can find out more on our page about Mainstream and community supports.
